Poole school celebrates Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday
Sir David Attenborough celebrated his 100th birthday last week, and his inspiration fired up the imaginations of Yarrells School pupils.
Yarrells School and Nursery has marked the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough, with pupils taking part in a wide range of environmental activities designed to encourage a deeper understanding and appreciation of the world around them.
Cllr Mark Howell, Mayor of Poole, joined pupils and staff for this special occasion and helped plant a purple maple tree in the parent garden as a lasting tribute to Sir David Attenborough and his extraordinary work protecting and championing the natural world.
The celebrations began with a special assembly led by the school community. Eco committee leader William stepped into the role of Sir David Attenborough and was interviewed with thoughtful questions prepared by the children, including: what was the first job you wanted to do? What has been the highlight of your career? What advice would you give to younger people? And what is your number one wish for the world?
Year Six pupils shared reflective speeches about endangered animals, while Year Two children performed poems celebrating the beauty of our planet. Throughout the day, lessons across the school were linked to environmental themes, encouraging pupils to think carefully about conservation, wildlife and sustainability. Reception children also enjoyed a wildlife hunt and creative activities in the forest school with their Year Six buddies.
Children from across the school wrote personal pledges on leaves, sharing the ways they can help care for the environment. These pledges were displayed in the parent garden for families to enjoy and reflect upon together.
The school also sent cards and birthday messages to Sir David Attenborough hoping to share with him how much he continues to inspire younger generations.
The school’s commitment to environmental awareness continues throughout the year through its enthusiastic Eco Committee, dedicated gardening club and the support of Mr Hill who works tirelessly to ensure the school grounds continue to thrive. With the woodpecker as the school emblem and environmental values at the heart of school life, pupils are increasingly embracing eco-friendly habits such as cycling to school and lift sharing.
The school would also like to thank Mr Hill for his support with the tree planting and preparations for the mayor’s visit, as well as all parents and families who continue to encourage children’s curiosity and care for the environment at home.
