Wimborne Food Festival serves up culinary craft
Wimborne's third food festival celebrates local cuisine and chef demonstrations, with a party atmosphere.
The third Wimborne Food Festival took over much of the town on Saturday 19 September. The day featured displays of cooking in the theatre, plus feasts for the eyes and tastebuds. With fresh oysters, local beers and street food, the event delivered a smorgasbord of delights among the wine tasting, sampling and cakes.
Colin Nash from the Colin Nash Restaurant took a star turn in the theatre tent. He talked through his career from working 100 hours-a-week as a young chef to having his own name above the door. He showcased local produce that included sea bass and seaweed, and a fine dish of pigeon in hedgerow salad.
Further demonstrations provided practical advice: River’s Edge Bistro chef Colm McKavanagh showed some cunning tortilla tricks, and Great British Bake Off¬ contestant Maggie Richardson gave tips on mastering choux pastry.
Along East Street there was plenty of fun activity. Cllr Chris Brown, with his Town Crier hat on, stopped by to play the decks outside The Butcher’s Dog, where a half of New Zealand Latitude 41 pale ale helped the fresh sausages from Keating’s Butchers BBQ go down very well.
The cannoli from East Street Deli were also delicious (and your editor felt no guilt in snaffling the last of the cappuccino flavour.) Wherever you looked, there was some clever idea, like a fig and Blue Vinny salami at Fluffets Home, or rare flavours of local jams and pickles in the Allendale Centre and at the farmers’ market in the square.
