Countdown to Christmas in Wimborne
Performances from several choirs will take place in front of a huge screen, ahead of the light switch on at 5pm.
For so many people in Wimborne, the day on which the lights are switched on – Saturday 28 November – marks the official start of Christmas.
And it is far more than just a ceremony, with festivities kicking off at 1pm with The Quarterjacks Marching Band, setting the stage for an afternoon of music. The Square will come alive with vocal performances from Queen Elizabeth School, Allenbourn Middle School, Live Harmony, Dumpton School, Just Sing, Vivamente Voices and Love Soul choirs, leading up to the lights switch-on by Wimborne Mayor Cllr Jeff Hart at 5pm.
This will be followed by Wimborne’s Militia ringing in the festive season with a gunfire salute on the Minster Green.
Work is already underway to install over 25,000 LED bulbs and 2,000 metres of string and rope lighting to decorate the town. A real Christmas tree will soon take centre stage in the Square.
The Wimborne Christmas advert, funded by Wimborne BID, will be publicly unveiled for the first time on the big screen in the Square. This marks the ninth-year Wimborne BID has funded a Christmas advert for the town, produced once again with Justin Gray of Gray Creative Agency.
Fiona Pawsey, chairperson of Wimborne BID, said: “Events like this are great for local businesses and in this tough economic climate, it’s really important that people consider keeping more of their Christmas spending within the local economy.
“We want to encourage everyone to come down, soak up the festive cheer and be part of Wimborne’s biggest start to Christmas yet.”
