Council reuse shop to move to Bournemouth

Cllr Mike Cox says the move to Wallisdown of the 'New to You' reuse shop will make it more accessible for shoppers.

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council’s ‘New to You’ reuse shop, which is currently based at Cabot Lane in Poole, is to move to Wallisdown in Bournemouth.

Cllr Mike Cox, deputy leader and Cabinet member for Finance at BCP Council, said: “‘New to You’ is one of those services that quietly makes a real difference to residents’ lives. It helps them access affordable everyday essentials, supports families who may be struggling financially and reduces waste by giving unwanted items a second life.

“Moving the service to Wallisdown will make it more accessible for shoppers. The site is better connected by public transport and sits in a more central location for those residents across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole keen to bag a bargain.”

The move forms part of a wider plan to create a community-focused hub at the vacant Wallisdown Heights building – bringing together other services, including the Children’s and Adult Social Care teams and partner organisations, into one single accessible location.

This plan was also approved unanimously by BCP Council’s Cabinet.

The building will be given a new lease of life through refurbishment before services currently working from ageing or unsuitable accommodation elsewhere within the Council’s estate move in.

Cllr Cox said: “These recommendations also pave the way for us to generate capital receipts from the sale of buildings services will vacate when they move to Wallisdown.

“Cabinet also discussed the disposal of the land at Cabot Lane that ‘New to You’ currently occupies. This land is already earmarked for sale to Wessex Water, who have significant plans to improve water treatment across the South West.

“As part of this, Cabinet recommended that five per cent of any funds from this sale be set aside to finance water improvement proposals across BCP.

“This is another benefit our work will bring – helping to deliver investment in infrastructure that will improve the resilience of water services for all residents in the area.

“The nearby bowls club could also benefit. These proposals complement ongoing discussions we are having with them around opportunities for investment and improvements to their facilities too.”
