Animal Defenders International (ADI) has applauded the overwhelming rejection at CITES’ (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) 17th conference in Johannesburg of Swaziland’s attempt to legalize trade in Southern White Rhino Horn. Additional marine areas in Dorset have been identified for protection in a new report, ‘The case for Marine Conservation Zones’ which has been published by the Wildlife Trusts. The report identifies 48 areas around England that, if designated, will complete a “blue-belt” of protected places for marine wildlife.
Animal lovers around the world were shocked at the announcement from CITES CoP17 (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species 17th Conference of the Parties) in Johannesburg, that the African lion will not be uplisted to Appendix I status, denying the big cats the highest level of wildlife protection available. The news came despite a campaign from Animal Defenders International (ADI), with support from the public, governments, and Hollywood superstar Ricky Gervais.
