Purple Flag for Bournemouth’s evening and night-time economy

Bournemouth noted for transport, free events and support for visitors.

Bournemouth’s evening and night-time economy has received a boost as it has retained its prestigious Purple Flag accreditation for a 16th year.

Destinations are assessed against rigorous standards covering areas including safety, wellbeing, movement, entertainment, dining, culture and partnership working.

Bournemouth’s latest accreditation recognises the collective work taking place across the town centre, coordinated through the BID and delivered alongside local businesses, BCP Council, Dorset Police, Bournemouth Town Pastors and other partners.

Strengths highlighted during the assessment included improvements to evening public transport, including capped fares and specialist staff who guide passengers arriving in the area, helping to provide greater clarity and reduce disruption.

Bournemouth Town Pastors, who are approaching 10 years of operation, were also recognised for their continued work supporting vulnerable people and educating young people about staying safe on a night out.

The town’s programme of free, family-friendly events was another key part of the submission. The popular Pier Approach fireworks attract large numbers of visitors, boosting footfall and generating wider benefits for hospitality businesses across Bournemouth.

Victoria Sheppard, night-time co-ordinator for Bournemouth Town Centre BID said: “Retaining Purple Flag for a 16th year is a considerable achievement and reflects the sustained work taking place to make Bournemouth town centre welcoming, vibrant and safe throughout the evening and into the night.

“Bournemouth Town Centre BID is proud to have led and enabled this year’s submission, bringing businesses and partners together and ensuring the work happening across the town is properly represented.

“This achievement reflects the contribution of the businesses, organisations and individuals involved in Bournemouth’s evening and night-time economy. It demonstrates what can be achieved through long-term investment, coordination and genuine partnership working.”

Cllr Rich Herrett, BCP portfolio holder for Destination, Leisure and Commercial Operations said: “To obtain Purple Flag status for the 16th year is a fantastic achievement. This is a testament to the independently assessed and recognised partnership working that takes place not just with Purple Flag but across numerous across projects and events.
