REVIEW: We Will Rock You
P & P Productions, Lighthouse, Poole
By Marilyn Barber | newseditor@dorsetview.co.uk
I’m not usually lost for words, but I am in danger of running out of superlatives to describe this musical.
In all my years of reviewing, this is quite simply one of the best productions I’ve ever seen.
The wow factor is there from the very first moment until the last bars of the music of Queen ring out.
You could argue that with a story and script by Ben Elton, music and lyrics by Queen and original vocal score by Brian May, Roger Taylor and Mike Dixon, it was going to be a winner anyway. However, it’s a tricky one to stage and needs a hugely talented cast.
It is a dystopian story, which nevertheless is uplifting. Earth in the future is controlled by the all-powerful Globalsoft Corporation. Musical instruments are forbidden and the memory of rock music has been systematically erased.
The eight main characters are just sensational with voices that soar into the air and delighted the packed audience on the first night.
Adam Davis as Galileo and Chloe Payne as Scaramouche are the duo working to break free. Their voices and stage presence are simply stunning.
The same can be said for fellow rebels Michelle Wright as Oz and Lewis Baines as Brit.
Dominating the stage with their performances and powerful voices, Libby Russell epitomises evil as Killer Queen with Jamie Thomson as chief of police Khashoggi.
Ian Metcalfe as Buddy and Catherine Attridge as Teacher complete the hugely talented main players.
This is a huge production with 48 members of the full company, 16 Teen Queens and 11 featured Bohemians, all of whom act and sing with such consummate skill.
Of course, the music of Queen is memorable and gives so much vitality to this production, and band conductor Alastair Hume and the musicians deserve a standing ovation.
The costumes and stage set are innovative, and director Claire Camble-Hutchins deserves numerous accolades for pulling this all together.
I can’t recommend this too highly. And don’t just take my word for it. My friend was bowled over too.
It runs until Saturday. Get your tickets from https://www.pandp.org.uk/buy-tickets.
