Shakespeare Shout to return to Christchurch
The first event was such a success that Christchurch Town Council has agreed that the event will return on 23 April 2027.
Christchurch’s inaugural Shakespeare Shout was such a success this year that the event is set to return in 2027. At a meeting of Christchurch Town Council’s Community & Engagement committee, councillors approved the principle of continuing the event.
Held on St George’s Day, 23 April, the Shakespeare Shout is a nationwide celebration that brings communities together through a shared reading from Shakespeare’s Henry V. This year residents and visitors gathered at the Bandstand on Christchurch Quay to take part alongside communities across England. The event went on to receive the national Best Location Award.
Cllr Maggie Fidler, Mayor of Christchurch, said: “Receiving the Best Location Award for the Shakespeare Shout confirmed what locals already know: that Christchurch offers one of the most remarkable settings in the country for community events. With the Quomps, our historic Bandstand, the Priory and the Quay forming a stunning backdrop, we can create something much bigger than a single Shakespeare reading. Our vision is to build a community celebration that brings together schools, youth organisations, families, heritage groups and local organisations to celebrate Shakespeare, the legend of St George and the rich history of our town. We hope the Shakespeare Shout will grow into a signature annual Christchurch event: a celebration of our heritage and heart, creativity and community spirit.”
Next year, the Town Council hopes to build on that success by developing the Shakespeare Shout into a distinctive annual heritage celebration that belongs to the whole community. Ideas discussed include greater involvement from local schools, Scouts, Guides, youth organisations, community groups and heritage organisations, creating opportunities for people to contribute performances, artwork, storytelling, music and creative activities inspired by both Shakespeare and the legend of St George and the Dragon.
