New artwork installed at Poole Hospital

Scenes of local natural life and landscapes taken by East Dorset Photography Club have been installed in the patient transportation area.

Poole Hospital has become a cheerier place with new artwork having been installed in the patient transportation area.

The East Dorset Photography Club took a selection of photos of natural life and landscapes across Poole. Patients and University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) staff then voted on their favourite images, with printing and installation of the top 12 photos donated by Grosvenor Interiors.

Max Carter, who led the project on behalf of the East Dorset Photography Club, said: “We arranged a special day out for the club in Poole, tasking members to come up with striking and unusual images of Poole. We decided to work in the square photo format to suit the location, and we spent some time ensuring that they were arranged in the most pleasing way.”

The vibrant display was designed to bring a sense of calm, comfort and familiar natural beauty to patients as they travel to and from their appointments at Poole Hospital.

The cost of the printing and installation was won in a competition at an NHS Charities Together conference by Jessica Tyler, Fundraising Manager for University Hospitals Dorset NHS Charity.

Colin Horn, Managing Director at Grosvenor Interiors, said: “Supporting this project has been a real privilege. The East Dorset Photography Club captured such beautiful scenes of Poole, and seeing those images brought to life in the hospital has been incredibly rewarding. We donated the printing and installation because we believe strongly in the power of art to transform clinical spaces and lift the experience for patients, visitors and staff. It’s wonderful to know this display will be admired for years to come.”

Laura Joy, Arts Manager at UHD, said: “Being in blue and green spaces has been proven to lift mood and reduce anxiety, and looking at images of these spaces elicits the same response. We would love to have more uplifting local scenes in our hospitals and would be interested in hearing from anyone who may be interested in sponsoring a panel or series.”

Already, the artwork has made an impact on hospital patients, visitors and staff, who recognised and reminisced about the local areas depicted.

Niki, a staff member from the Poole Hospital pharmacy team, said: “It puts a smile on your face to see these photos and really makes you appreciate where you live. Art makes the hospital feel more ‘human’.”
Another NHS colleague was delighted to see a scene from Poole Speedway, situated a stone’s throw from Poole Hospital. They said: “I’ve been a Speedway fan for years. It’s great to see our team up here on the wall.”
