Reveal your family history at free event in Bournemouth
Attendees to the South West Really Useful Family History Show will be able to learn about how to research their own family tree and lineage.

Fans of programmes like ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ should save Saturday 29 March in their diary, as the South West Really Useful Family History Show will be held on that day in Bournemouth.
Organised by the Dorset Family History Society in partnership with Devon Family History Society and the Family History Federation, the event will provide attendees with the chance to meet with experts and learn how to trace their own family’s history and lineage.
The free event and will feature knowledgeable speakers, local history and commercial exhibitors who provide goods and services of interest to family historians, experts, and representatives from local history societies. There will also be free parking, refreshments and a raffle.
Talks scheduled for the day include ‘Making the most of your autosomal DNA matches’ at 10.30am and 1.30pm. This is practical talk showing attendees how to use data from the website Ancestry DNA to advance your family history research.
The other talk is ‘A to Z of Family History – an alphabetical journey through less well-known sources’, at 12noon and 3pm, which will guide audiences on how to use a variety of less known resources to trace their family tree.
Talk attendance will be limited and so seating will be allocated on a first come, first served basis at the event. A small fee will also apply.
On the day, attendees can reserve a free slot to meet the experts who can help with:
- ‘Dating Photographs.’ Bring along old family photos for help with dating them.
- ‘Exploring Your DNA.’ Between talks, meet the speaker to get advice on your own DNA journey.
- ‘Palaeography – reading old wills.’ Tips for looking at old handwriting and assistance with deciphering old wills. Bring along old documents to get some guidance.
- ‘General Family History Research.’ Researchers from Family History Societies will be available for advice, guidance & general help with research challenges.
The South West Really Useful Family History Show will be held at Kinson Community Centre (Pelhams Park), Millhams Road, Bournemouth, BH10 7LH on Saturday 29 March 2025 from 10am until 4pm.
