Storm Austen to hit Dorset later this week
The first named storm of the season is on the way, bringing heavy rain and strong winds from Friday into the weekend.
The Met Office has dusted down its storm name list, with Storm Austen the first of the season on the way. This has led the organisation to deliver a yellow wind warning, in force from midnight on Friday to 12 noon, covering south Wales, south-west England and southern coastal counties.
There is the chance of 50-60mph winds, with 70mph gusts, potentially bringing flying debris, travel disruption and power cuts. A further depression will follow, bringing more wet and windy weather over the weekend.
Met Office advice for those on the coasts is to, “stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore, large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
